EILEEN GORDON, CERAMIC ARTIST

Eileen has three areas of focus; large sculptural pieces, coil built vases and urns, and wheel thrown works.  She incorporates carved designs and textures in many of her works that are inspired by the sea and marshlands of coastal North Carolina.

The large sculptural works are created using slabs of clay.  They are made in segments which are then bolted together and sit on a base.  She also uses slabs to create large vases.

Eileen’s large coiled vases and urns are made from hand rolled clay coils, usually added to a wheel thrown base.  As the coils are added, she uses the wheel to throw and blend them, achieving a smooth and symmetrical look.  She frequently enhances the designs with carved surfaces, hand made stamps or clay additions.

She also focuses on wheel thrown decorative and utilitarian pieces which she carves with various designs.  She enjoys using and experimenting with alternative firing methods such as raku, saggar, and pit or barrel firing to achieve unique one of a kind surfaces and colors.
